Take Inventory – Know what you want

News Flash! Not everyone is the Prince or Princess of our dreams. Knowing what you want and don’t want in a partner can be your saving grace.

It is time well spent to take inventory of your past relationships. What did you enjoy? What did you despise? What happened in each relationship that caused it to end? Past relationships are all wonderful learning experiences!

Then, take a good, honest look at yourself and really think about what it is that you want and need in a partner. Which is more important: a six-figure salary or to truly be passionate about your career? Are you the type of person that likes your own space or do you enjoy spending as much time as possible with your partner?

This is a good start, but don’t stop there. Think about all areas of your life and what you need. For instance, think about your career, family life, children, home life, hobbies, and passions. Also, think about your morals and ethics.

Once your list is complete, break this inventory into ‘needs’ and ‘wants’. When you meet someone, whether online or in person, keep this list in the back of your mind. If you feel it’s important to pursue your passion and the person you’ve just met constantly complains about their dead-end job, that’s a flag. Not that one flag means it’s over, but you get the idea – make sure the person you’re with fills your needs.

Remember, it’s your life – make sure you get what you need.
